Entry # 2. Period Mood Swings

I would like to discuss a topic that most people do not want to talk about… Menstruation. Has your friend, girlfriend or even mom acted different from their usual self?  They become more angry, sad or depressed at a specific time of the month. These mood swings are sometimes accompanied by painful cramps which just makes it worse. Most people say it’s the time of the month. Have we thought about the science behind that vast emotional change? Here is why.

According to healthline.com, Ovulation happens about halfway through your cycle. During this time, your body releases an egg, causing estrogen and progesterone levels to drop. A shift in these hormones can lead to both physical and emotional symptoms. Changes in estrogen and progesterone levels also influence serotonin levels. This is a neurotransmitter that helps regulate your mood, sleep cycle, and appetite. Low levels of serotonin are linked to feelings of sadness and irritability, in addition to trouble sleeping and unusual food cravings.

These mood swings can be frustrating especially to people around females going through it. One thing we can do when a loved one has mood swings is to give them space, show them love and be extremely patient with them. So, the next time your girlfriend is going through an emotional roller coaster as a result of menstruation, her favorite foods and a smile is all she needs.

Until next time.... Please like and share!!
